Skirt as top has this awesome pattern as a free download! I'll admit, this isn't the only one I've made. It's super easy and is a great staple to have. I picked up the knit at City Craft. They have an awesome selection of organic knits right now! I adjusted the pattern a little by taking some of the flare out of it and adding a little length, which I always have to do. Since I didn't think to take my sweater off, it has short dolman sleevers... I'll do better next time! It took maybe an hour total and only a yard of fabric! I'll be making plenty more for next summer, also!! Linking up with Lauren and Lindsey!

Way more fun that I had expected! First, I want to give a big THANKS to Caroline and Jessie for talking me into going and hanging out with me! These two are some amazing, local sewing friends, and I <strike>most likely</strike> wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for them. I'm all kinds of an introvert (understatement of the century... my hubby hung out with my parents while I was gone and apparently he and my mom discussed how shocked they were that I even wanted to go), so large groups of people aren't really my thing. I've read about the last two years of Sewing Summit and really wanted to the chance to get to know more people who love to sew and quilt!

Caroline and I traveled and roomed together, along with her friend Alissa. We had such a good time! Caroline and I couldn't leave until Thursday morning, so we missed the shop hop, and didn't go fabric shopping the entire trip! (It's not like we are running low, but still.)

Classes were so much fun! I realized that I didn't get pictures of all of my projects, but they're in the other room right now, and it's obviously too much work. :) One highlight of the weekend was getting to sew on these babies... Thanks, Bernina!
I made a metal-frame pouch in Elena's class. This was super easy and so much fun! I listened to Leanne Barlow speak about her creative journey and how she went from sewing her own clothes to manufacturing. So inspiring!
My last class the first day was hand-printing fabric with Miriam Tribe. It was a fun class, but when my project started coming together, I was sold! It's so cool. I'm planning a fabric-printing night in the future.

I moved sewing rooms earlier this year from an extra bedroom to what was technically the "office" on our floorplan. I was wanting to do some painting and other things to the room, but if we have kids ever, the room would be their room. Pretty much, I'm just lazy and the though of re-doing the room again in a couple years was too much! So, I got the office with the bay windows and lots of light :)

We painted first back in February... I wanted gray, wanted it to look gray, but not be too dark. (8 cans of sample paint later...) I'm pretty happy with the results!

I had been wanting an actual, sturdy table for cutting and storage for a while, so I sweet-talked my hubby into helping me build it from an Ana White's Modern Craft Table plan. It wasn't hard, but it did take a while since we just worked on it when we had free time. Finishing furniture is a weakness of mine... I have absolutely no patience! But I love how it turned out! Around the same time, I found the bar stool at a thrift shop by my office and painted it with some left over sample paint. I store pretty much all my fabric on the shelves. I use comic book boards for the 1/2 yard + pieces and fold FQ's below.

After finishing the table, we also built the pipe shelves and stained them to match. I found a bunch that I liked online and kind of winged it to put them together! The old sewing stuff came from my Mother-in-law. She was cleaning out the basement and found a lot of stuff that belonged to her grandmother and my husband's grandmother and I got it all! It's all in great condition, but I just use it for decor. The canister holds selvages in case I ever decide to use them!

The peg board and small shelf was in my last room. I use the peg board for whatever it will hold and the shelf is mainly for WIPs. The smaller containers don't really fit... I'm planning on puting up another shelf above the windows for those to go on eventually. These were on sale at Lowes earlier this year and I couldn't pass them up!

I also put up a new design wall using foam board! It's a lot bigger than my last one and I love it! This is the first thing I've had up on it all summer... I've been sewing a lot of bags and cloths and not so many quilts.

My sewing machine is set up on another wall with thread and a bulletin board. When I'm quilting I have another table I set up behind this one to make things easier. And yes, I share the room with my puppy. This is the only room with windows on the front of the house and she stays in here pretty much all day every day keeping an eye on things :)

It's still a work in process but I love my room! I still have a closet full of things I don't use on a regular basis in my old room, but it works for now. I still need to put up curtains, build a bigger ironing space, and hang things on the little remaining wall space I have. O-- and if you have any storage ideas for smaller than FQ, but bigger than what I would consider a "scrap" let me know! I don't have any good ideas!
I finally passed the last part of the CPA exam. I nev-a, ev-a thought it would actually happen. I've spent the last few months really buckling down to try and finish. I was going to be losing one of my scores in December, so I was trying really hard to get it taken care of before then. And it actually worked! I'm not actually certified yet... that'll probably be a couple (or few) months. I have to turn in more paperwork and get employer letters and wait for processing, so you know how that goes... don't go asking me for tax advice yet. Or ever probably, since I don't do taxes :)

I want to give a HUGE thank you shout out to all of my friends and family and especially the Hubs. I don't know what I would do without all of you and your encouragement and support the last few years through grad school and the exam, especially when things weren't going according to my Type-A plans. (Hello 6 month self-imposed testing timeline turning into 18 months when I couldn't pass anything.)

Here's to more fun and being laid back and more sewing and blogging! I've been making things off and on (people don't stop having babies when you have no time to sew) and will start posting about those. I have pictures, but haven't even looked at the pictures, much less blogged about it. And I'll treat you to a few pics from the vacation we took last week, too!

Again, thanks so much to everyone! I love you all!

And the last one is turning out to be one of my favorite collections! Sarah Jane's Out to Sea. She has way more pictures on her blog since I failed to take more. I am loving the hot pink and navy colorway and think it would make the most adorable nursery (I even have paint colors picked to match: navy and white stripe under a chair rail and one wall hot pink above and the rest aqua). This will come in handy since I'll be having kids soon (hahaha, not really). I am considering <strike>hoarding</strike> buying enough of it to make nursery bedding and decor from whenever I have kids in the next 5 years. If I do that, I'll jinx, won't have a girl, and still won't get to use it. Dilemma. I will be investing in the embroidery patterns, since I "taught" myself over Memorial Day weekend.
I bought Parisville as a gift for myself when I graduated with my masters. I bought some Prince Charming when I passed a CPA exam section. I just ordered more (I decided I needed a bag from it). We'll see if that is a congratulations or condolences gift when I get another score this week. This was my first time getting to meet Tula. (She wasn't in Houston in October, but was there at my first market. I was just tardy to the Tula party and didn't talk to her then.) She is so nice! All the designers are, I just get nervous before I talk to them... and then end up usually not. She reminds me of my friend Molly that I made these for.

We went to both of her schoolhouse sessions. One was for her book that is out and the other was for her fabric lines. Both were great. I really like hearing about the inspiration behind the lines. Here are pictures from both schoolhouses.
I love getting to meet fun people! It makes me all that more ok with the ridiculous amount of money I spend on fabric to know that I'm supporting all these great people who do what they love!Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-82477771960426164852012-05-23T12:44:00.000-05:002012-05-24T21:30:44.179-05:00Quilt Market: SchoolhouseThis was my 3rd time to go to Market, but the first time we've done the Schoolhouse Series.

Side note/Back story: We usually just go to fall market in Houston so we can drive and save some money, however we are not going to be able to go in October. My sister is pregnant with my second niece and is due in October. Initially, they were thinking the due date would be around the 13th, which is no problem since Market is the last weekend of the month. After their first doctor visit and sonogram, her due date was changed to officially be October 21st, but she was measuring to be due October 27, which is the day market opens. With my first niece, she went a week past her due date, so we were pretty sure we'd be missing market. We were pretty bummed because it's been a fun mother/daughter thing the last couple years (well... mother/daughter/other business partners thing). But that week Southwest was having an airfare sale and we found one hotel room for the Thursday night of market, so we booked it! My mom's co-owners skipped out since we were flying and they could still go in October, so it ended up being an actual mother/daughter trip!

Back to reality... We always drive to Houston the day of Schoolhouse, so we hadn't ever gone before, but I think it was well worth it! Yes, it is kind of a sales pitch, but you get to pick which ones you want to hear and the sales pitch is more by the Author/Designer/Etc., and about how you can use their book/fabric/product in your shop. And they show you new stuff that's not out yet :) We knew of a few we for sure wanted to go to and just randomly picked others where nothing really stood out. My favorites were Tula Pink (we went to both of hers) and Angela Walters. These next couple posts, I'm probably going to sound like a rabid stalker/fan of both of them, but how can you not be?!?

Other side note: I did a horrible job taking pictures of almost everything. A lot of these were with my iphone because I was too lazy to get out the real camera, and then once I did I was either far away or there was horrible lighting or I just don't know how to work it. That's what I get for not listening to my husband every time he tries to show me, but I wasn't about to call and ask him again :)

Back to pictures.
This has been going around the bloggy world for the last few weeks, so I had heard of it, but didn't really pay that much attention. Her quilts were great!
Like I said, horrible pictures. But anyways, I think these are great, simple designs to use for quilts that aren't fussy and girly.

Next, we went to the class for a book called Simply Triangles by Barbara Cline. All of her quilts looked so complicated, which is so not my thing, but they really aren't. The are all based on a triangle pattern and a lot of them were strip pieced. She also used a netting overlay to add some of her color variations, which I never would have thought of. I would have just bought different fabric.
We also went to Angela Walter's session for her new book, Free-Motion Quilting with Angel Walters. This is definitely going on my to-buy list when it comes out next month. FMQ terrifies me. Especially on my tiny Bernina. Here are some of the quilts she brought.
Long time, no see :) It's been the usualy craziness around here, but I did just get back from a whirlwind trip to Quilt Market this weekend with my mom! As soon as I get some time, I'll be doing a couple of posts about all the gorgeous new fabric and patterns that are out. We just did a quick trip, with our flight to KC leaving at 6 am Thursday and getting home at midnight on Friday. Needless to say, all I did was sleep this weekend!

So, here's what I have for you guys today.... (pardon my bad pictures, I forgot to do this until tonight and wanted to get it up asap!)
The 3 on bottom are from the Modernology line, the stripe is Bespoken, and I can't find the other two on their website now :( I'm sorry. These were extras from my swoon quilt that I'm, of course, still working on. Also, there is a Raspberry Ripple pattern from Melly & me and the very first issue of Generation Q Magazine that I picked up at market.
These will all come in a bag by Green Bag Lady that was handed out by Amy Butler at her schoolhouse on Thursday!
They have a rewards program, where once you spend $xxx you get $40 off (Disclaimer: I didn't want to get in trouble for putting how much you have to spend to get that. By my husband, that is. In my defense, it has taken me about 4 years to accumulate it.). I was planning on just spending that, as I'm trying to cut back on fabric purchases (sad face) since I don't have time to do anything with what I have. But it was free, so it doesn't count, right?

I have been collecting fabric for what will one day be a king size spider web quilt, like this or a sting quilt like this, I can't decide. We are probably going to need a new mattress in the future, so maybe by the time we save up for it, I'll have this finished. Here's what I purchased:

A couple of the prints from the bottom two pictures came from Quilter's Stash in Southlake, but their website is down right now.

I also got this pattern that I've been wanting for a while. I have a few cuts of voile that I need to make up into dresses and thought this would be great. I just need to find something to line it with. Voile can be kind of expensive, so I was wanting to use something else for lining, but I'm not sure now. I'll probably break down and buy some...

Needless to say, I didn't make it in my $40 budget. Oops!
Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-8595966831574334282012-03-12T20:56:00.001-05:002012-03-13T11:15:17.004-05:00Gender Party! (and the cutest thing I have ever made!)My BFF is preggo with baby #2 and asked me to throw a gender party for their families. It was held on Saturday afternoon and was so much fun! We went with a cowboy/cowgirl theme, which really was just bandanas, burlap and mason jars. I made some fabric pinwheels and a simple bunting for decor. We started off with some super cute invitations from Sweet Bee Design. Alicia was great to work with and got us just what we wanted!

Also, Big Sister needed a new outfit. This is what I'm chalking up as the cutest thing ever! I hope that doesn't sound like I'm full of myself, but the combination of everything was super cute! I ordered the Malibu Mega Ruffle Dress pattern from Tenderfeet Stitches on Etsy. I really wasn't wanting to make it because of all the ruffles, but it wasn't bad at all (although I've since ordered a ruffler for time's sake). Here is the big sister!

The fabric is all from the Wanna be a Cowboy 2 line by Riley Blake I bought last year. Some of the prints are a little hard to find. I bought them at Cabbage Rose, but they're out of a few of them now. The tags were left on the boots just in case she didn't like them, which was a good thing. They are going back next week :) I'll let you all see pictures of the rest of the party, but heres the news you've all been waiting for..... it's a GIRL!

I did some organic straight line quilting on the man quilt. I didn't finish it before my mom repossessed her sewing machinge, so I have a walking foot on order. Maybe it will be a birthday quilt...

I've been planning a gender party for her new sibling. It's on Saturday and she has the cutest new dress to wear, so there will definately be pictures of that.

And, apparently it's baby season again! I think for the last 3 weeks, I've found out that someone else is pregnant, so there will be lots of baby stuff in my future! I already have a fabric shopping date planned with one of the new mommies! (No babies here, but thanks for checking.)

I also had a fabric shopping date with my mom and may or may not have spent too much :) That probably deserves it's own post, though! I'll try to be here more often! Thanks for hanging around!Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-188063025839800712012-02-07T13:06:00.001-06:002012-02-07T13:07:54.265-06:00Border... Or No BorderI have the man quilt top finished... I thought. It just looks unfinished to me. Does it need a border? I always put a border (or 3) on quilts. My options in this case would be a scrappy border or white. The binding is a wide black and gray stripe. What do you think? Pardon the horrible picture I took at 6 this morning when I left for work. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-4795632679049513062012-01-26T12:26:00.000-06:002012-01-26T12:26:59.477-06:00Swoon BlockI have officially made one block as part of the swoon-along.

I don't think these are going to get done on a regular basis, but 8 more to go!Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-27610586695603245952012-01-18T19:28:00.004-06:002012-01-19T08:44:24.385-06:00Swoon-Along
I'm joining the swoon-along started by Katy over at I'm a ginger monkey! I bought the pattern last summer and decided to use some Art Gallery fabric I bought at sample spree in October. I wasn't really wanting to have many fabric repeats, so I added in some additional Art Gallery prints from other lines and a couple of solids.

The Swoon-along goal is one block a week. So far, I have one cut out. That counts, right? It's taking a little longer for me to do the cutting. Rachael from Stitched in Color said when she made the quilt, there was lot of wasted fabric the way the flying geese were pieces. I made a couple pieces to gauge the finished size and borrowed my mom's flying geese ruler and am trying to cut them out this way. I'm going to sew this block up first to make sure all my measurements are correct. I don't trust myself that much :). I'll try to post as I get the blocks done. I think I'm going to put the finished product in my guest bedroom.

Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-77323543904026049242012-01-12T09:29:00.000-06:002012-01-12T09:29:47.072-06:00The Man QuiltMy husband had been mentioning for <strike>years</strike> a while that he would like his own quilt, you know, one that's not all "girly." Earlier this summer I started scouring fabric sites (since I usually don't do that) looking for fabric for him. I ended up going with a black/gray/white theme and ordered fabrics that either I thought he would like, or that reminded me of him in some way.

I intended to make it for his Christmas gift, but I just got it cut out this weekend! Better late than never, right? I'm shooting for his birthday now. Surely I'll have it done by May. I saw this quilt and liked the simple patchwork pattern. I stole one of my mom's Turning Twenty books just in case, too. I didn't want the blocks as large as those, so I just made up my own measurements for them. The finished blocks will be 11" square. Here's a sneak peak of some of the fabrics.

All my pieces cut out.

And here's a finished block.

So far it's coming together quickly! I have the 8" squares sewn to the smaller rectangles! I'm hoping that I can get it together and quilted while I am using my mom's borrowed machine. She has a walking foot and I don't :)Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-69726717302081932822012-01-06T09:37:00.000-06:002012-01-06T09:37:01.667-06:00ChristmasI still forgot to take pictures of all the gifts I made for Christmas, and there weren't even that many!

My mother-in-law requested a bag to carry her lunch/snacks to work with special requests for water bottle pockets. This was a make it up as I went along bag. I used aspects from a few patterns that I had made before, but altered the size, since she didn't want it really big.

I used a laminated cotton from Joel Dewberry's Heirloom line. I purchased it from citycraftonline.com, but they don't sell laminates online. You can also find it from a couple places on etsy. I hadn't ever sewn with laminates before, but it wasn't too bad. I had read a suggestion to put tape over the bottom of the presser foot to keep it from sticking to the fabric, which I did. I tried at first to not use pins, so it wouldn't leave holes. Eventually I gave up on this, but I don't think it was noticeable. I also made a matching gathered clutch using the pattern from Anna at Noodlehead.

My big gift from my parents was Electric Quilt 7.

This is one of those things I never really thought about getting or even wanting... mainly due to price. I would never have bought it for myself. I've gotten to play with it a little. I drew up the quilt I am making my husband, just to see it together. I'm also playing around with a few other designs that I can hopefully make this year. It has some very cool features and block patterns. Very fun.

On a trip to Barnes and Noble this week, I also got this with a gift card I was given for graduation last year.

It's also available on Amazon. I actually paid more with my gift card than I would have ordering it on there, but I needed to use it and I don't have to wait for it to get here (like I'll even open it for a few months...). I've really been wanting to learn how to embroider to add labels, or just something special to quilts and other projects. I don't think this is her beginning book, but I liked the patterns in it more.

I'm also using my Christmas cash to get my sewing machine cleaned. It's only been 3 years... that's not too long, right? Maybe that's why she's be mad at me. Hopefully she'll be home later this week! She'll then be taking another trip to my sisters for her to use . Meanwhile, I have my Mom's machine to hold me over!Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-3714101116971593372012-01-03T18:27:00.000-06:002012-01-03T18:27:01.199-06:00ParisvilleI love this line. It may be one of my all-time faves. I bought a fat quarter bundle of this last December as a graduation present to myself. I gradually acquired other pieces, but was terrified to cut into them. Do you have that problem? The fabric is just so pretty, it makes me sad to cut into it. Especially when you'll be losing some of the pattern, like you do in this.

Anyways, I finally bit the bullet and did a simple patchwork of 6" (finished) squares.

When I put it together, it was still a little smaller than I wanted, so I added a Bella Ivory and scrappy border and binding. I bought larger pieces of my two favorite prints to use on the back, and pieced the remainder on the back.

I finished the backing and top back in June. I was going to attempt to quilt it on my machine, but had some major problems. Once again, my wonderful mother came through and offered to quilt it for me. I got it back from her in August or September (she lives about 5 hours away), but just finished hand-stitching the binding. I don't like how my machine binding turns out and I don't mind having something to work on while I'm watching TV. I found a tutorial for a ladder stitch for binding and it really went much faster... after I already had half of the binding done.

Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-3222693603430439032011-12-29T17:32:00.000-06:002011-12-29T22:43:06.129-06:00TeachingI hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! I've had this saved for a while, so here's something to read while I work on a post for Christmas gifts I made.

I don't have any friends that live close that really like to sew. They will go to the fabric store with me to appease me and happily accept anything I make, but that's about the extent of it. I keep hoping I rub off on one of them and I think I finally have!

Back in October, I was making a "quick" trip to my lqs and asked a friend if she wanted to go. I think she agreed just to see what the fuss was about. And, I promised we could go to In-n-Out after (she used to live in LA). She ended up buying a yard of Moda's Hometown line, thinking she would use it for some kind of art work in her new house. While we were there, she casually asked if I would teach her how to sew! She started off asking about a bag or purse, but since she's never sewn, I suggested something a little easier, with more straight lines, like a pillow. Fast forward 2 months and we finally had our sewing date! She came over for dinner with her puppy, Tosh.

I think she enjoyed herself! I have a request for a follow-up trip to the fabric store to pick something out for another project!

Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-15059737518464107202011-12-22T13:48:00.000-06:002011-12-22T13:48:24.947-06:00Hey Girl. Coasters.Tell me that you've read the Handmade Ryan Gosling quotes. You haven't? Ok, I just discovered it this week, too. Not sure how I missed out on that. Anyways, go read them. Now. For additional hilarity, read Quilt Dad's post. There's also a Feminist Ryan Gosling and a Law School Ryan Gosling, but Handmade is the best imo.

One of my friends and I have the same sense of humor... not everyone gets it all the time (like my husband- most of the time he does, but he didn't find this funny). I immediately thought of her when I read this and knew she would love it! A commenter on Quilt Dad's post said something about how these should be magnets, so I immediately thought coasters! What a great Christmas present!

I copied a few off of the handmade website and used a few of Quilt Dad's quotes and put them on pictures. I had to redo some of them so that I could crop the picture once they were printed. The text on some wouldn't have fit on the coaster. Once I had them how I wanted, I uploaded them to Walgreen's to have them printed (since I had to go there the next day anyways, I'm not really partial to Walgreen's, just wanted to save myself a trip. And when I got here, there were only 2 parking spots! Last minute Christmas shopping at Walgreen's? Come on, people. You can do better than that! Walmart is just down the street.)

I stopped by Lowe's and got some 4x4 tiles.

I think next time I'll go with some that are a little more flat-ish and not so textured. Why that wasn't obvious this time, I'm not sure.

I cut felt squares to go on the back. I used my rotary cutter and cut them to 4x4, then ended up rounding the corners before I hot glued them on.

I didn't take pictures of the hot-glue process... I assume you are all familiar with that :)

I picked up my pictures and trimmed them down to slightly smaller than 4x4 (I did between 3.5 and 3.75, depending on the picture). There was only one I couldn't get trimmed down to the right size. This could be avoided by measuring the picture while editing, or something, instead of just "eyeballing" it.

I finished them this morning. I added a layer of mod podge.

Then the picture. (And yes I am working from home today... hence the keyboard in the background. I needed to get this done before leaving town this afternoon. So, I answered emails AND mod podged this morning. Multi-tasking at it's finest.)

I wasn't able to do it at the time with finals, etc, but told her to ask again sometime. Back in May she asked again and I said yes.... surely with 7 months to finish, it would be possible, right? Well, I actually did!

She requested reds and tans, which is a little outside of the norm for me. I'm more of a blue, green and gray girl :). I was at my Mom's store, lilliesthimble.com, and she had just gotten in the Mason de Garance line by French General. I really loved this line! Since I was afraid I wouldn't get it done, I just went with a disappearing nine-patch pattern. I also through in some dark brown for good measure and I'm glad I did. Before I put the border on, it was looking very Christmas-y to me and I was not liking it. I think the border de-Christmased it. I kept the back pretty plain and used one of the prints in the line and bound it with a stripe, which always makes me happy :).

I did a loose stipple for quilting on my Mom's long-arm at her shop. I don't have a walking foot and free motion quilting is rather difficult on my tiny 20 year-old machine. It was a little nerve-wracking quilting for the first time on the long-arm on a quilt that was being made for someone, but I was happy with the way it turned out! I hope her mom loves it!

I used this pant pattern. I just added the bottom band of fabric onto the pant pattern. The shirt was on sale at Walmart for $2. I ripped the pocket off and added a raw-edged applique from this fabric. I originally bought the fabric at lilliesthimble.com, but I cleaned them out (see this post). They were a little big in the waist, so I took the elastic in a bit. Overall, it was a success. It's hard making things for people when they aren't around to try them on. A's Mom liked hers too, but I didn't get a picture of those.

A wasn't feeling well that night, but she was a trooper and let me take pictures anyways. Here we are in the finished products!

I have some other finishes to show you as soon as I am home in the daylight hours to get pictures. A few others will have to wait until after Christmas so we don't ruin any surprises!Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783367777681796649.post-40318141547702211462011-12-01T13:53:00.000-06:002011-12-01T13:54:50.568-06:00One of those days...Do you ever have one of those sewing days where nothing goes right and your best friend is your seam ripper? I had that times 2. All I wanted was a pair of Christmas pajama pants for myself and a friend.

I picked out some flannel Dr. Seuss Grinch Christmas fabric for our pants. I was at my Mom's for Thanksgiving and we couldn't find the pattern we always use. So we went with another that she had, which just had two pattern pieces (it's a "learn to sew" pattern-- how hard can it be?).

We were thinking clearly enough to realize that one piece of fabric was a directional print, so we got that right. However, (mistake #1) we didn't flip the pattern when cutting out the second piece, which left us with two of the exact same cuts. So. had we sewn them together, one leg would be inside out. So I bought more fabric (what was all that was left on the bolt). The other pair wasn't a directional, so those were fine (for now).

We started sewing those together and they were huge! They would have easily fit my husband. Not so much me. I tried to just trim them down a little by taking a bigger seam, but since it was just the inseam, it didn't work well. So we decided that the only thing to do would be to rip them all the way out and cut them down to the next patten size. We measured and apparently kept comparing measurements to the crotch seam instead of the hip area (mistake #2). So we cut them down two smaller sizes AND took an inch off of the middle. Then we trimmed the other pair down exactly like that (mistake #3). When we sewed my pair up, you guessed it... WAY too small. Which also meant the other pair would be too.

To avert a disaster, and save me from buying another 3 yards of fabric, we cut the pants down the sides, added a strip of fabric, matched up the pattern and sewed an extension on. The pieces we added on were also not the same size. I'm <strike>cheap</strike> creative. What can I say?

There's the seam we added.
Yes, they fit a little wonky, but they're pajama pants.... don't judge. The other pair we didn't really try to save. I brought home the extra big leg we initially cut and went to another store and bought enough for another leg. I'll only cut it down a little this time. We are dubbing this the Great Pajama Pant Debacle of 2011.

Here is the finished green ones:
Just my creative space on here to share and get ideas for all that I want to do! I may not be the best at keeping up with it, but I'll try. I love to sew and quilt... I kind of know how to crochet (I made one hat, which did not fit the intended recipient) and am dying to learn embroidery.
Unfortunately, I'm also in the middle of my CPA exam. This means that instead of getting to do all the fun stuff I would like to do, I'm usually studying.
I'm an Auntie to my sweet niece, and a Frauntie (you know-- a friend aunt) to another precious girl and they are usually on the receiving end of what actually gets produced.

Please pardon the state of my blog for now; I promise I'm working on it :)Kayleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08130426504278136605noreply@blogger.com0
